Sclerotherapy

SCLEROTHERAPY Leg Vein Treatment …used successfully for years to treat unsightly varicose and spider veins. Spider veins, often referred to as “starbursts,” form just beneath the skin and radiate out from a central point- resembling the shape of a spider. They sometimes appear as fine, separate lines in a web-like maze or as “branches” from a tree-shaped trunk. These can develop on any part of the body such as the face, legs, thighs, calves and ankles. Varicose veins are larger veins that can be painful and unsightly also. Over 80 million Americans suffer from varicose and spider vein discomfort and choose to have treatment. The causes for each type can include family history, abnormal blood flow, injury, birth control pills, medications that affect hormones, advanced age, pregnancy, weight gain, sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time – are the most common causes. Excessive sun-exposure has been shown to cause red or pink facial and nose clusters.

Sclerotherapy has been used successfully to treat spider and varicose veins for many years and is the treatment of choice in many cases.

SCLEROTHERAPY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is Sclerotherapy Injection treatment? Sclerotherapy injection treatment has been used safely and successfully to treat varicose and spider veins since the 1930’s. It is an “injection” of solution of sodium chloride. This is injected directly into the vein using a fine needle – so the discomfort is minimal.

How does Sclerotherapy work to treat spider and varicose veins? The injection solution “irritates” the lining of the blood vessel causing it to stick together and the blood to clot. The vessel then turns into scar tissue that fades from view - over time.

Are there side effects to Sclerotherapy treatments? Side effects rarely occur from Sclerotherapy injection treatment, but as with any treatment, are possible. The most likely side-effects include raised red areas at the injection sites that go away in a few days. Brown lines or clots may form at the sites – these are from iron that escapes from the injected veins. These also disappear over time. Some achiness or minimal swelling is common as part of the treatment – and all goes away within a few days to a few weeks.

What happens after Sclerotherapy Injection treatment? You will be able to drive yourself home and resume normal activities immediately! You will be encouraged to walk and wearing compression hosiery will be required. You will be allowed to take cool showers - but hot baths/compresses or sitting in saunas or whirlpools will not be permitted for a period of time. You should avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications for at least 48 hours after your treatment. Tylenol is o.k. as needed.

*It is important that you discuss all medications with your surgeon.
